"Customers are so used to thinking a piece of
jewelry comes out of a machine already formed. That is why I always show the
customer the flat piece of sterling silver and explain how it will become a
three-dimensional, designed custom piece of jewelry or other metal
item. It is important to me that the customers realize the possibilities of
design for their piece. In fact, I welcome the customer to see the piece in
progress, to hold it and have input in its completion.
My jewelry typically is a textured and
filed form, often with a rough surface. It's as if nature already molded the
piece and I discovered it through the slow process of moving the metal. When
creating a design with no customer in mind, I am often influenced by my
knowledge and love of the silver work of early civilizations. It is the
permanent quality and timelessness of the metal that stands out to me as a
designer.
Most of my one-of-a-kind items are not
designed merely as an accessory. These metal pieces are small sculptures
that the body wears—as if the body is the easel. The finished piece of
jewelry is its own statement to be admired and appreciated on its own."
